To accommodate the surge of devotees heading to Prayagraj for the Mahakumbh, Northern Railways has introduced four special trains. This decision comes a day after a tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station

The trains will run from Delhi to Prayagraj and Darbhanga, with three heading to Prayagraj Junction and one departing from Anand Vihar Terminal.

The introduction of these special trains aims to manage the increased passenger traffic during the Mela and provide added convenience to travellers. “For the convenience of the rail passengers and to clear extra rush during Mahakumbh Mela, Railways have decided to run Mahakumbh Mela Special trains,” stated an official announcement by Railways.

Stampede Incident at New Delhi Railway Station:

A tragic stampede occurred at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday, resulting in 18 fatalities. Police reported that two major trains, Swatantrata Senani Express and Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express, were delayed, causing platforms 13, 14, and 15 to be overcrowded with anxious passengers.

An announcement about a special train departing for Prayagraj from platform 16 led to confusion. “A train to Prayagraj was already at platform 14, where the Prayagraj Express usually departs. When the announcement about the special train came, many passengers assumed it was their regular train and rushed toward platform 16,” police sources told PTI.

The confusion arose because both trains had similar names starting with ‘Prayagraj’. “The announcement of the Prayagraj Special arriving at platform 16 led to confusion because the Prayagraj Express was already at platform 14. People who couldn’t reach their train at platform 14 thought their train was arriving at platform 16 leading to the stampede,” explained a police official.
