Co-op society secy held for fund embezzlement
Balasore: A senior secretary of Durgadevi Cooperative Society under Remuna block in this district has been arrested by Vigilance officials for allegedly embezzling funds meant for farmers under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY).
According to sources, the accused, identified as Girish Chandra Behera, senior secretary of the cooperative society, had allegedly misappropriated Rs 5.8 lakh of the compensation money meant for 38 farmers of Durgadevi area who had suffered crop loss during 2021-23.
During a Vigilance probe, Behera was unable to provide appropriate records or justification for the missing compensation funds which led to his arrest. A case (2/2025) was registered with Balasore Vigilance police under Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. Behera has been remanded to judicial custody.
