Trump Suspends Tariff Threat For 30 Days After Canada, Mexico Assure To Strengthen Border Security

United States President Donald Trump placed his tariff threat on hold on Monday, February 3, granting a 30-day pause after Mexico and Canada agreed to enhance border security to curb the flow of immigrants and fentanyl into American territory.

Following what he described as a “good call” with Donald Trump, Canada agreed to implement a border plan that met US demands, leading to a temporary suspension of Trump’s tariffs, reported Mint.

Meanwhile, no agreement has been reached between China and the United States, meaning tariffs on Beijing are set to take effect within hours.

Announcing the border deal with Canada, Trump stated, “Canada has agreed to ensure we have a secure Northern Border, and to finally end the deadly scourge of drugs like Fentanyl that have been pouring into our Country, killing hundreds of thousands of Americans, while destroying their families and communities all across our Country.”

In a separate post, Trump confirmed he was delaying tariffs on Canada for 30 days to assess how the deal unfolds, concluding with the phrase “fairness for all.”

“I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the Tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30-day period to see whether or not a final Economic deal with Canada can be structured. FAIRNESS FOR ALL!” Trump added.

What is the new border deal that has softened Donald Trump?

1. The US-Canada border deal is a $1.3 billion plan.

2. It includes strengthening the US-Canada border with additional helicopters, technology, and personnel.

3. A total of 10,000 frontline personnel are currently deployed and will continue working to protect the border.

4. Canada will appoint a Fentanyl Czar to monitor and prevent the drug’s flow into the United States.

5. Criminal cartels will be classified as “terrorists.”

6. The US-Canada border will have 24/7 surveillance.

7. A joint Canada-US strike force will be established to combat organised crime, fentanyl trafficking, and money laundering.

What is the US-Mexico deal?

1. Mexico has agreed to deploy 10,000 National Guard members to reinforce its northern border.

2. The deployment aims to reduce illegal migration and drug trafficking.

3. The United States has pledged to curb the trafficking of high-powered weapons into Mexico.

Why did Donald Trump agree to make a deal with Canada?

While Donald Trump had threatened tariffs against Canada, he also insisted on measures to curb immigration.

Following the US-Mexico agreement, some Canadian conservative politicians called on the federal government to deploy military forces along the US-Canada border, according to CBC.

Canada’s Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre urged outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to address Trump’s concerns and “send Canadian Forces troops, helicopters and surveillance to the border now.”
