Delhi BJP Protests Outside Kejriwal’s Residence Against AAP’s Fake Voter Registration Claims

The Delhi BJP staged a protest on Friday, criticising the AAP for allegedly making false claims about voter registrations from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Protesters, holding placards with messages like “Purvanchal Virodhi Kejriwal,” voiced their discontent against Arvind Kejriwal. Some demonstrators even attempted to breach security barricades near his residence.

Protesters’ Anger and Police Response

During the protest, slogans such as “Litti chokha khayenge, Kejriwal bhagayenge” filled the air. A protester expressed anger over being labelled as fake voters, stating that this sentiment would persist until Kejriwal was removed. Another participant recalled past grievances during Anna Hazare’s movement, feeling used and humiliated by Kejriwal.

The police intervened by using water cannons to disperse the crowd and prevent them from advancing further. Over 20 protesters were detained for demonstrating without permission. They were taken to various police stations in police buses, according to a senior officer.

BJP’s Reaction to Kejriwal’s Allegations

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari accused Arvind Kejriwal of consistently insulting the Purvanchali community. He referenced past statements made during the COVID-19 pandemic and criticised Kejriwal for calling them ‘fake voters.’ Tiwari emphasised that this perceived betrayal would not be forgotten by people from Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Bihar, or Delhi.

Kejriwal had accused the BJP of manipulating electoral rolls by registering fake voters from neighbouring states in his constituency ahead of assembly polls. He lodged a formal complaint with the Election Commission regarding 13,000 new voter applications submitted between December 15 and January 8.

Upcoming Assembly Elections

Addressing the media after filing his complaint, Kejriwal claimed that many new voters were brought in from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to create fraudulent registrations. He argued that such actions undermine the integrity of elections. The BJP swiftly condemned his remarks, sparking further controversy.

Elections for Delhi’s 70-member assembly are set for February 5, with vote counting scheduled for February 8. The ongoing tensions between AAP and BJP highlight deep-rooted political rivalries as both parties prepare for the upcoming polls.
