Chennai Woman Arrested For Embezzling Rs 52 Lakh From Hospital
A woman named Soumya, working as a cashier at a prominent private hospital, was arrested on charges of embezzling hospital funds in Chennai, Oneindia Tamil reported.
Soumya, 24, originally from in Thiruvarur district, had been employed at the hospital run by Dr. Maithili and her husband, Dr. Palani, who are both experienced doctors and residents of Metrozone flats in Chennai.
The couple has managed the hospital in Anna Nagar West Extension for nearly a decade.
Trouble began when patients reported that their payments were not being reflected in the hospital’s records. Noticing a pattern, Dr. Maithili became suspicious and conducted a detailed review of the hospital’s accounts, the report added.
The investigation uncovered that Soumya had allegedly redirected patient payments, totaling Rs. 52 lakh, into her personal bank account instead of the hospital’s official account.
Upon discovering the discrepancy, Dr. Maithili lodged a formal complaint with the Avadi Central Crime Branch. Following the complaint, the police conducted an investigation, leading to Soumya’s arrest in Kannammapet, Chennai.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the matter to understand the full scope of the alleged fraud.
