Lima: In a tragic incident, a football player in Peru lost his life after being struck by lightning during a match, leaving both fans and the community in shock.
The incident occurred during a match between the clubs Juventud Bellavista and Familia Chocca in the city of Huancayo, where a sudden downpour forced the referee to pause the game.
As players began leaving the field, lightning tragically struck 39-year-old defender José Hugo de la Cruz Mesa, who reportedly died instantly.
A few other players suffered injuries and were quickly rushed to the hospital, where they were treated for burns and electric shock injuries.
Among those affected, Erick Estiven Ccente Cuyllor, Joshep Gustavo Pariona Chocca, and Cristian César Pituy Cahuana are currently under medical observation. Local reports indicate that goalkeeper Juan Chocca Llacta remains in critical condition.
The harrowing event unfolded around 4 PM, when the referee decided to call off the match as storm clouds gathered.
